German Cockroach

Blattella germanica

The small tan kitchen roach β€” fastest reproducer and the hardest to eliminate.

Size
1/2" – 5/8"
Color
Light tan to brown with two dark parallel stripes behind the head
German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) β€” Iowa pest

What it looks like

  • Small, ~1/2" long, light tan
  • Two distinct dark parallel stripes on the pronotum (the shield behind the head)
  • Wings cover the body but they almost never fly
  • Nymphs are dark with a single light stripe down the back

Where you'll find it

  • Kitchens β€” behind/under refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and microwaves
  • Inside cabinet hinges and the gap between cabinet and ceiling
  • Under sinks where it's warm and damp
  • Bathrooms, especially shared apartment plumbing chases

Behavior & biology

German cockroaches are the most prolific. A single female can produce 30,000–50,000 descendants in a year. They live entirely indoors and almost always arrive in cardboard boxes, used appliances, grocery bags, or via shared walls in apartments. They prefer warm, damp, food-rich spaces. Resistance to common pyrethroid insecticides is now widespread β€” proper treatment requires gel bait rotation.

Peak Iowa activity months

Year-round indoors. German cockroaches do not have a season.

Signs of an infestation

  • Small tan roaches scurrying when you turn on a kitchen light at night
  • Dark pepper-like droppings inside silverware drawers and cabinets
  • Brown smear marks along baseboards behind the stove
  • Live nymphs seen during the day (a sign of heavy infestation)
  • Musty odor

Health & property risk

Major asthma and allergen trigger, especially in children. Mechanical spread of Salmonella, E. coli, and other foodborne pathogens.

How we treat it

  1. 1

    Inspection + flush

We inspect every void, hinge, and appliance gap. A flushing agent reveals the actual harborage points.

  2. 2

    Gel bait rotation

We use 2–3 different gel bait matrices (resistance is real) placed at every harborage point. We come back at 14 and 30 days to refresh and rotate.

  3. 3

    IGR application

An insect growth regulator stops nymphs from molting into reproductive adults β€” this is the part that breaks the breeding cycle.

  4. 4

    Residual void treatment

Targeted dust applied inside wall voids and behind cabinets where gel can't reach.

Why DIY usually fails

Hardware-store foggers are nearly useless against German cockroaches and often make populations worse by scattering them. Most over-the-counter gel baits use formulations resistant strains reject.

FAQ

Almost always from a cardboard box, a used appliance, a grocery delivery, or a shared apartment wall. Once in, they reproduce fast.
