Pest Control in Pella, Iowa

Pella's mix of historic Dutch-heritage architecture, Central College student housing, and major employers like Pella Corp and Vermeer makes for a unique pest profile. Older homes with intricate wood trim attract carpenter ants and box elder bugs, and Lake Red Rock just outside town drives mosquito pressure. We service homes, college rentals, and commercial accounts throughout Marion County.

A short history of Pella

Pella was founded in 1847 by 800 Dutch immigrants led by Reverend Hendrik Pieter Scholte, who left the Netherlands seeking religious freedom. They named the new settlement Pella β€” Latin for 'place of refuge' β€” after the ancient city where early Christians fled persecution. Scholte's house, built in 1848, still stands one block off the square and is one of the oldest homes in central Iowa.

Pella's Dutch heritage is still the city's defining feature. The downtown square is built around the Molengracht canal and the Vermeer Mill β€” at 124 feet, the tallest working windmill in the United States. The Tulip Time Festival, held the first weekend of May since 1935, draws more than 150,000 visitors a year.

Pella is also a serious manufacturing town: Pella Corporation (windows and doors, founded here in 1925) and Vermeer Corporation (heavy equipment, founded here in 1948) are both headquartered in the city. Central College, founded in 1853, brings about 1,200 students to town.

Services we provide in Pella

Common Pella pest problems

Older Dutch-style homes near downtown Pella are carpenter ant magnets β€” decorative wood trim, wood porches, and any history of moisture damage all give carpenter ants nesting opportunities. We treat carpenter ants in Pella every spring.

Box elder bugs are a notorious Pella fall pest. South-facing homes can see literal swarms covering siding in late September. We pre-treat in mid-September to break the cycle.

Lake Red Rock mosquito pressure reaches well into Pella city limits during wet summers. Yard barrier treatments make outdoor entertaining possible.

Spider activity in older basements and detached garages is a year-round Pella issue, especially in homes built before 1960.
