Pest Control in Pella, Iowa
Walk the Pella square past the Molengracht canal and the Vermeer Mill and you're looking at a downtown built by Dutch immigrants in the 1840s, with decorative wood trim on nearly every storefront and home nearby — the kind of detail that also happens to be a carpenter ant's favorite habitat. Between that historic core, Central College's rental housing, Vermeer's and Pella Corp's workforce, and Lake Red Rock a few miles out, this is a town with several distinct pest personalities.

A short history of Pella
Pella was founded in 1847 by 800 Dutch immigrants led by Reverend Hendrik Pieter Scholte, who left the Netherlands seeking religious freedom. They named the new settlement Pella — Latin for 'place of refuge' — after the ancient city where early Christians fled persecution. Scholte's house, built in 1848, still stands one block off the square and is one of the oldest homes in central Iowa.
Pella's Dutch heritage is still the city's defining feature. The downtown square is built around the Molengracht canal and the Vermeer Mill — at 124 feet, the tallest working windmill in the United States. The Tulip Time Festival, held the first weekend of May since 1935, draws more than 150,000 visitors a year.
Pella is also a serious manufacturing town: Pella Corporation (windows and doors, founded here in 1925) and Vermeer Corporation (heavy equipment, founded here in 1948) are both headquartered in the city. Central College, founded in 1853, brings about 1,200 students to town.

Common Pella pest problems
Historic and downtown homes: intricate wood trim, old porches, and decades of moisture history around the square make carpenter ants a near-annual spring visit for many of these houses.
Fall box elder bug swarms: Pella has a reputation for this — south-facing homes can see siding genuinely covered in box elder bugs by late September, and pre-treating in mid-September is the difference between a manageable fall and an overwhelming one.
Lake Red Rock proximity: mosquito pressure from the lake reaches well into town limits during wet summers, especially for yards near the water or low-lying areas.
Older basements and detached garages: spider activity here runs essentially year-round in homes built before 1960.
