Mosquito Control in Des Moines & Central Iowa
Iowa summers mean mosquitoes — especially anywhere near rivers, lakes, low spots, or thick vegetation. The Des Moines River corridor through Ottumwa, Lake Rathbun, Lake Red Rock, and the dozens of farm ponds across our service area all create perfect mosquito conditions. Our barrier treatments cut yard mosquito populations by 80–90% for 3–4 weeks, so you can use your deck, garden, and yard without becoming dinner.
Signs of an infestation
- More than a few bites within 5 minutes of stepping outside
- Standing water in gutters, planters, or low spots in the yard
- Heavy mosquito activity at dawn and dusk
- Recent rain followed by a sudden mosquito explosion
- Mosquitoes inside the house multiple times per week
Our process
- 1
Yard inspection
We identify breeding sites — clogged gutters, bird baths, planter saucers, low spots, and tree holes — and tell you what to drain or fix.
- 2
Barrier spray
We treat shrubs, tree lines, fences, deck undersides, and shaded areas where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.
- 3
Larvicide
Where standing water can't be drained (rain barrels, water features), we use kid- and pet-safe larvicide that targets larvae only.
- 4
Re-treat every 3–4 weeks
Most clients book monthly May through September for consistent yard freedom.
Why DIY usually fails
Citronella candles, bug zappers, and personal repellents do almost nothing for yard mosquito populations. Foggers from the hardware store last hours, not weeks. Professional barrier sprays use a residual that holds up through rain and regular yard activity.
Iowa seasonal timing
Iowa mosquito season runs late May through early October. Pressure peaks July and August, especially in years with heavy rain. Lake areas (Rathbun, Red Rock, Lake Wapello, Lake Ahquabi) see mosquitoes 2–3 weeks longer than the metro.
