A short history of Indianola
Indianola was founded in 1849 as the seat of newly organized Warren County and named after the small Texas port of Indianola, then a popular destination for Iowa-bound settlers shipping goods up the Mississippi. Simpson College, the city's defining institution, was founded in 1860 and named for Methodist Bishop Matthew Simpson, a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln.
Simpson is also where George Washington Carver β born into slavery in Missouri β became the first Black student to attend the school, in 1890, before transferring to Iowa State and going on to international fame as an agricultural scientist. The Carver Science Building on campus carries his name.
Since 1970 Indianola has hosted the National Balloon Classic each summer, and the National Balloon Museum on the north edge of town is the only museum of its kind in the United States. Lake Ahquabi State Park, six miles south, is one of the most-visited state parks in southern Iowa.

Common Indianola pest problems
Lake Ahquabi area homes deal with mosquitoes, ticks, and the occasional snake call (we don't do snakes β but we cut back the rodent populations that attract them). Yard barrier sprays are common here from May through September.
Indianola's growing subdivisions face the typical new-build issues: spiders, pavement ants, and gaps that let mice in their first winter.
Simpson-area rentals see classic college-housing pests β ants, spiders, occasional fruit flies in shared kitchens.
Older homes off the square have carpenter ants and rodents, especially homes with finished basements and crawl spaces.
