A short history of Bloomfield

Bloomfield was platted in 1844 as the seat of Davis County. Its 1878 courthouse, designed by T.J. Tolan, is considered one of the finest surviving 19th-century courthouses in Iowa and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Davis County has one of the largest Old Order Amish and Mennonite settlements in the state, and Bloomfield's square still serves as the trading center for those farms, complete with hitching areas for horse-drawn buggies.
