Monroe was platted in 1865 along the Des Moines Valley Railroad and grew as a shipping point for the coal mines and farms of southern Jasper County.
Coal mining faded by the mid-20th century, leaving a farm-service town of roughly 1,800 that today serves as a bedroom community for Pella, Knoxville, and the Des Moines metro.
