A short history of Johnston

Johnston was platted along the Des Moines and Minneapolis rail line in the 1800s and incorporated in 1969. Camp Dodge, established in 1907, sits on its northern edge and remains the headquarters of the Iowa National Guard.

The completion of Saylorville Dam in 1977 reshaped the area, and Johnston grew from a small town of about 2,600 in 1980 into one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Iowa, now home to Pioneer Hi-Bred's global research operations.
