Pest Control in Chariton, Iowa
Hy-Vee opened its first store on the Chariton square back in 1930, and the company still keeps a distribution and corporate footprint here even as it's grown into one of the largest employee-owned companies in the country. The rest of Chariton is quieter: a courthouse square on the National Register, farmland pressing in from every direction, and Red Haw State Park a couple miles southeast. We run this as a standing route out of Albia, about 30 minutes north.

A short history of Chariton
Chariton was founded in 1849 and named for the Chariton River, which in turn was named for the French-Canadian fur trader Joseph Chorette. It became the seat of Lucas County the same year, and the Chariton Square — laid out around the Lucas County Courthouse — is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Chariton's biggest claim to fame is Hy-Vee. Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small general store here in 1930, in the middle of the Great Depression. Today Hy-Vee, Inc. is one of the largest employee-owned companies in the United States, with more than 280 supermarkets across the Midwest, and it still maintains a major distribution and corporate footprint right here in Chariton.
Red Haw State Park, on the southeast edge of town, was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and is famous for the spring redbud bloom that draws photographers from across Iowa.

Common Chariton pest problems
Farmsteads and acreages on the edges of Chariton — mice and voles moving into machine sheds and outbuildings is one of the most common calls we get here, especially as harvest wraps up and rodents look for a warmer spot to overwinter.
Homes around the historic square carry the same old-home pattern as Albia: ants in spring, mice in fall, occasional carpenter ant activity near mature trees.
Red Haw State Park-adjacent properties see noticeably heavier mosquito and tick pressure than in-town homes, especially through summer.
Commercial accounts in and around Chariton, including any tied to the Hy-Vee distribution footprint, benefit from documented monthly service plans.
Wasp removal is a steady late-summer call across Chariton, particularly around outbuildings and detached garages.
