A short history of Creston

Creston was founded in 1869 as a division point on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and for decades it was one of the most important rail towns in southwest Iowa — the CB&Q was by far the largest employer. Its 1899 depot is now city hall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Creston became the seat of Union County in 1891 and today anchors the region as home to Southwestern Community College and the Green Valley and Summit Lake recreation areas.
