A short history of Urbandale
Urbandale started as a streetcar suburb. The Des Moines City Railway extended its Urbandale line out along what is now Douglas Avenue, and the town incorporated in 1917 with roughly 200 residents clustered near the end of the line.
Postwar growth turned it into one of the metro's largest suburbs, and Living History Farms — a 500-acre open-air agricultural museum that hosted Pope John Paul II in 1979 — opened here in 1970. Today Urbandale is home to major employers in insurance and agribusiness along the Hickman and 100th Street corridors.
