A short history of Albia
Albia was platted in 1845 and chosen as the seat of Monroe County the same year. The town's identity was shaped by coal β from the 1870s through the 1920s, southern Iowa's bituminous coalfields ran right through Monroe County, and dozens of small coal camps surrounded Albia. The Buxton coal town just south of Albia was, at its peak around 1905, one of the largest unincorporated communities in Iowa and one of the most racially integrated towns in the United States.
When the coal economy faded, Albia kept its Victorian-era town square almost entirely intact. The Albia Square Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the best-preserved 19th-century commercial squares in Iowa β locals still call Albia 'Iowa's Greatest Little Town.'
Today Albia is a quiet county-seat town with strong ties to nearby Lake Miami and Lake Wapello state recreation areas. Pest Control Techs LLC is headquartered here on the historic square.

Common Albia pest problems
Lake Miami and Lake Wapello cabins and homes deal with seasonal mosquito and tick pressure that homes in town never see. We run dedicated mosquito and tick yard treatments at lakeside properties from May through September.
Albia's historic Victorian and Craftsman housing stock β much of it 100+ years old β is rodent-prone. Stone foundations, wood floors, root cellars, and wraparound porches all give mice easy entry. Fall trapping and exclusion is a heavy season for us in town.
Carpenter ants are common in homes with mature shade trees and any moisture damage. Spring and early summer we run carpenter ant calls weekly across Albia.
Brown recluse spiders have been documented in older Iowa homes including in our region. We treat any suspect sighting carefully and identify positively before recommending treatment.
