A short history of Colfax

Colfax was platted in 1866 along the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and named for Schuyler Colfax, then Speaker of the U.S. House and later Vice President under Grant.

In the 1870s drillers looking for coal struck mineral water instead, and Colfax became a nationally known health-spa destination with several large hotels and bathhouses drawing visitors into the early 1900s. The resort era faded, but the hillside Victorian homes it built remain.
