Box Elder & Asian Lady Beetle Control in Iowa
Every Iowa fall, two pests invade in massive numbers: box elder bugs and Asian lady beetles. They cluster on the south and west sides of homes in September and October, then squeeze through any tiny gap to overwinter in walls, attics, and inside light fixtures. Once they're in, they're nearly impossible to eliminate β but a well-timed exterior treatment in early fall stops the invasion before it starts.
Signs of an infestation
- Black-and-orange box elder bugs covering siding in September
- Yellow/orange Asian lady beetles clustering around windows and eaves
- Bugs appearing inside on warm winter days near windows
- Yellow staining on walls or curtains from beetles
- A faint chemical smell when beetles are crushed
Our process
- 1
Time the treatment right
Our exterior perimeter treatment goes on in mid-September through early October β before the bugs cluster but after the population peaks.
- 2
Treat siding and entry points
We focus on the south and west exposures, soffits, eaves, and any cracks or gaps these bugs use to get inside.
- 3
Interior treatment if needed
If they're already inside, we treat attic spaces, wall voids near light fixtures, and known cluster spots.
- 4
Repeat next fall
These are seasonal pests. One annual treatment in early fall is all most Iowa homes need.
Why DIY usually fails
Spraying bugs you see does almost nothing β the swarm is replaced within days. The trick is treating siding before they cluster, which requires the right product applied at the right time. Hardware-store sprays don't have the residual.
Iowa seasonal timing
Iowa box-elder and lady-beetle season runs mid-September through early November. Treat the second week of September for best results β after that, you're playing catch-up.
