Ant Control in Des Moines & Central Iowa
If you're seeing ant trails along your kitchen counter, baseboard, or back patio, you're not imagining it β Iowa's a bad state for ants. Our humid summers, abundant rainfall, and older housing stock give carpenter ants, pavement ants, and odorous house ants ideal conditions to nest inside walls, under slabs, and along plumbing lines. A few visible workers usually mean hundreds more behind the drywall. We treat the colony, not just the ants you can see.
Signs of an infestation
- Visible ant trails along baseboards, countertops, or window sills
- Sawdust-like piles near windows, doors, or wood trim (a carpenter ant red flag)
- Faint coconut or rotten smell when you crush an ant (odorous house ants)
- Ant activity that returns within days of spraying with store-bought products
- Winged 'swarmers' inside the house in spring β often mistaken for termites
Our process
- 1
Inspect & identify the species
We confirm the species (carpenter, pavement, odorous house, pharaoh, etc.) β treatment varies dramatically. A wrong product can scatter the colony and make it worse.
- 2
Treat the colony, not the trail
We use targeted non-repellent baits and perimeter sprays that workers carry back to the queen. The colony collapses from the inside.
- 3
Seal entry points
We identify cracks, plumbing penetrations, and weep holes acting as ant highways and seal them β so the next colony can't move in.
- 4
Follow-up
Most ant infestations clear within 7β14 days. We re-treat free if you still see activity.
Why DIY usually fails
Big-box ant sprays kill the workers you see and leave the queen alone. Worse, repellent sprays cause the colony to 'bud' β splitting into multiple smaller colonies that are harder to find and kill. We use the same non-repellent baits exterminators use, applied at colony-killing concentrations.
Iowa seasonal timing
Iowa's ant pressure peaks late April through September. Carpenter ant swarms hit in March and April. Pavement ants get worst in midsummer along driveways and slabs. By October, ants try to overwinter inside walls β fall is the most important treatment window.
