A short history of Fairfield
Fairfield was founded in 1839 as the seat of Jefferson County and hosted the first Iowa State Fair in 1854. Its courthouse square remains the town center, ringed by 19th-century commercial buildings.
In 1974 Maharishi International University moved into the former Parsons College campus, giving Fairfield an international population and an arts economy unusual for a southeast Iowa town of 10,000 — it's been called Iowa's 'Silicorn Valley' for its cluster of small tech and entrepreneurial firms.
