A short history of Granger

Granger was platted in 1880 along the Des Moines and Northwestern rail line and grew around coal mining in the surrounding Dallas County hills.

In the 1930s Granger became nationally known for the Granger Homesteads, a New Deal subsistence-housing project championed by Monsignor Luigi Ligutti to help unemployed coal miners' families — one of the most successful experiments of its kind in the country. Fifty homes were built and the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
