A short history of Winterset

Winterset was founded in 1846 and became the seat of Madison County, with a courthouse square that remains the center of town. Its most famous native, Marion Robert Morrison — John Wayne — was born here in 1907; his birthplace is now a museum and heritage center.

Madison County's six remaining covered bridges, built between 1870 and 1884, made the area internationally known after The Bridges of Madison County. Winterset is also credited as the birthplace of the Delicious apple, first grown on a nearby farm in the 1870s.
