A short history of Newton
Newton was founded in 1846 as the seat of Jasper County. In 1893 F.L. Maytag co-founded a farm implement company here that turned to washing machines in 1907, and Newton became known worldwide as the Washing Machine Capital, home to Maytag, Automatic Washer, and One Minute Manufacturing.
Maytag's Newton operations closed in 2007 after the Whirlpool acquisition, and the city rebuilt around wind-energy manufacturing (TPI Composites), the Iowa Speedway — which opened in 2006 — and Legacy Plaza on the old Maytag campus.
