A short history of West Des Moines
West Des Moines began as Valley Junction in 1893, a railroad-yard town built where the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific and the Chicago Great Western lines met. For 50 years it was a working-class rail town separate from Des Moines proper. The community renamed itself West Des Moines in 1938 to attract postwar suburban growth, and the original Valley Junction stretch on 5th Street is now a historic shopping and arts district.
Through the 1980s and 1990s the city pushed west across Mills Civic Parkway and Jordan Creek Parkway, becoming the corporate-and-retail anchor of the western metro. Wells Fargo's largest U.S. campus outside its San Francisco headquarters sits in West Des Moines, alongside Athene, Hy-Vee corporate offices, and the 200-store Jordan Creek Town Center.
West Des Moines now spans four counties (Polk, Dallas, Madison, Warren) and is the second-largest suburb in the Des Moines metro.

Common West Des Moines pest problems
Carpenter ants are common in West Des Moines homes with mature landscaping. Larger lots with old trees provide carpenter ant nesting sites that pressure-test interior walls.
Fall mouse pressure is significant in larger homes β more square footage, more entry points, more places for rodents to hide. Quarterly maintenance is the norm here.
Mosquitoes around Walnut Creek and Raccoon River bottoms are a major spring/summer issue for homeowners with backyard amenities.
Box elder bugs and Asian lady beetles cluster heavily on south-facing siding in fall, especially in larger 2-story homes with southern exposure.
