Cockroaches
Four cockroach species that show up in Iowa homes β and the one that lives there year-round.
- Size
- 1/2" β 2"
- Color
- Tan, brown, reddish, or glossy black depending on species

What it looks like
- Flat, oval body with long antennae
- Six spiny legs, fast runners
- Wings present but most species rarely fly indoors
- Active mostly at night β daytime sightings often mean a heavy infestation
Where you'll find it
- Kitchens (under sinks, behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges)
- Bathrooms (under tubs, behind toilets, inside vanities)
- Basements, crawl spaces, and floor drains
- Cardboard boxes, paper bags, and grocery deliveries (how they often arrive)
Behavior & biology
Cockroaches are nocturnal scavengers. A female German cockroach can produce 30,000+ descendants in a year. They eat almost anything β food, glue, paper, hair, soap. They prefer warm, humid, dark spaces close to food and water. Heavy infestations release pheromones that attract more roaches, accelerating the problem.
Iowa activity calendar
Peak Iowa activity months
German cockroaches are active year-round indoors. American and Oriental cockroaches push indoors more heavily in fall as temperatures drop.
Signs of an infestation
- Live roaches seen at night when you turn on a light
- Brown 'pepper-like' droppings in cabinets and drawers
- Egg cases (oothecae) β small, dark, segmented capsules
- Musty, oily smell in heavy infestations
- Smear marks where roaches travel
Health & property risk
Cockroaches contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli. Their shed skins and droppings are major asthma and allergy triggers, especially in children. Heavy infestations are linked to elevated asthma rates in affected households.
How we treat it
- 1
Inspect + identify species
Treatment differs sharply between species β German cockroaches need indoor bait, American/Oriental need exterior + drain treatment.
- 2
Gel bait + IGR
We apply targeted gel bait in cabinet hinges, voids, and behind appliances. Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) prevents nymphs from reaching reproductive maturity.
- 3
Crack + crevice treatment
Residual insecticide is applied to harborage points: under sinks, behind stoves, inside vanities.
- 4
Re-inspect + sanitation guidance
We come back at 14 days for inspection and re-treatment. Sanitation tips (food in sealed containers, fix leaks, empty trash nightly) are critical for lasting control.
Why DIY usually fails
Foggers and bug bombs scatter roaches into wall voids and other rooms β they make the problem worse. Big-box gel baits are usually outdated or rejected by resistant German cockroach strains. Professional gel rotation and IGR is what works.
