Where you'll find it
- Where ceilings meet walls — they build silk sacs in corners
- Inside curtains, behind picture frames, and in folded clothing
- Bedrooms (a frequent source of nighttime bites)
- Outside on siding, in shrubs, and under eaves
Behavior & biology
Yellow sac spiders are nocturnal hunters. They build a small silk retreat to sleep in by day and hunt other insects at night. When they encounter humans (often in bedding), they bite defensively. Yellow sac spider bites are responsible for many incidents misattributed to brown recluse — they cause a stinging bite that may develop a small ulcer but heals without significant tissue loss.
Iowa activity calendar
Peak Iowa activity months
Iowa yellow sac spider activity peaks May–October. Indoor bite incidents climb in late summer.
Signs of an infestation
- Small white silk sacs in upper corners of rooms
- Unexplained nighttime bites on exposed skin
- Pale yellow spiders on walls or ceilings at night
Health & property risk
Yellow sac bites cause sharp local pain, redness, and sometimes a small ulcer that heals in 1–2 weeks. Less severe than brown recluse but the most common 'medically relevant' spider bite in Iowa.
How we treat it
- 1
Inspect + remove silk sacs
We physically remove every silk sac we find — particularly in bedrooms.
- 2
Targeted residual
We apply residual insecticide along ceiling/wall junctions, inside closets, and behind curtains where they hide.
- 3
Light + clutter changes
Reducing exterior lighting that draws prey insects to the home, plus de-cluttering bedrooms, makes a measurable difference.
Why DIY usually fails
If you're getting nighttime bites, check ceiling corners and curtain folds for small white silk sacs and vacuum them up. Tuck sheets in tightly and pull beds away from walls.
