Signs of a termite infestation in Iowa homes

Iowa has subterranean termites. Here are the warning signs every Iowa homeowner should know β€” and why early detection saves thousands.

Iowa is rated 'moderate to heavy' for termite pressure by the USDA. Most Iowa termite damage is found by accident during a remodel β€” long after the colony has been working.

Iowa has Eastern subterranean termites (Reticulitermes flavipes). They're the most destructive pest in U.S. housing β€” more damage every year than fire and storms combined β€” and Iowa homeowners often assume they're a Southern problem. They're not.

The five warning signs

  • Mud tubes. Pencil-width brown tubes running up the foundation, basement walls, or piers. This is the #1 sign and the most reliable.
  • Swarmers. Winged 'flying ants' showing up indoors in March, April, or May β€” especially near windows and light fixtures. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a uniform-width body. Real flying ants have bent antennae and a pinched waist.
  • Discarded wings. Small piles of identical translucent wings on windowsills or in sinks after a swarm.
  • Hollow-sounding wood. Tap baseboards, floor joists in the basement, and door frames. Termite-damaged wood sounds papery and hollow.
  • Sticking doors and windows. Termite damage in a header can cause a door or window to suddenly stop closing properly.

Where to look in an Iowa basement

Subterranean termites need contact with soil. Inspect the entire perimeter of the basement, all support posts, the sill plate where the wood frame meets the foundation, and any spot where wood touches dirt β€” including deck posts, porch piers, and detached garages.

If you see a single mud tube, do NOT knock it down. Leave it intact β€” it tells the inspector exactly where the activity is. Snap a photo and call.

Why early detection matters

An established colony can do $5,000–$15,000 of structural damage to an Iowa home over 3–5 years before anyone notices. Annual termite inspections are cheap insurance β€” most cost less than $150 β€” and qualify you for a renewable bond that covers re-treatment if termites are ever found.

Iowa termite season

Subterranean termite swarms in Iowa happen on warm, humid days in March through May, usually after rain. If you see a swarm inside, it's coming from inside the structure β€” that's not a 'maybe,' that's the colony telling you it's there.
